When the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 take place in September 2026, Tokyo will once again host some of Asia's finest athletes. Swimming, diving and equestrian events will be held at venues that continue the sporting legacy of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
On your trip to Japan, you can experience these amazing venues without actually attending the competition. From swimming in a world-class pool and trying beginner-friendly outdoor sports, to exploring a peaceful equestrian oasis and a Tokyo 1964 Olympic park surrounded by nature, these venues offer sports experiences without the need to navigate crowds or buy event tickets. Here are four engaging locations where you can enjoy Tokyo's sports history while staying active on your trip, such as the Tokyo Aquatics Centre and the JRA Equestrian Park, both venues for the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games.
Stand tall on an actual Olympic medal podium from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (Tokyo Aquatics Centre)
Built for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Tokyo Aquatics Centre will once again welcome elite athletes during the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games as the venue for swimming and diving. Yet between major competitions, it functions as one of Tokyo's most accessible public sports facilities.
Anyone can swim in the same world-class pools used by Olympic athletes for just 700 yen per visit. If you'd rather stay dry, the fully equipped training gym can be used for 450 yen, and both plans include access to lockers and showers. Swimsuits and other essentials are also available for purchase, making it easy to stop by even if you haven't planned ahead.
The building itself is worth exploring. Designed to host international competitions, the venue features a striking modern façade and thoughtful interior elements, like the origami-inspired ceiling over the main pool that also serves as a visual guide for swimmers to stay in their lanes. Wide concourses, generous spectator areas and barrier-free design reflect the venue's international role while making it comfortable to navigate. The bright, open interior also provides a welcome escape from the sun.
Before you leave, spend some time at the Tokyo 2020 Games Memorial Gallery. Olympic uniforms, medals, an official winners' podium and other memorabilia help tell the story of the Games, while a virtual swimming simulator lets you experience the speed and precision of competitive racing. Even if you never set foot in the pool, the gallery offers an enjoyable look behind the scenes of one of Tokyo's most important sporting venues. The facility's continued use by both elite athletes and the public is a fitting example of how the Olympic legacy continues to benefit the city.

Just outside the Aquatics Centre, Tatsumi-no-Mori Seaside Park offers a quieter side of Tokyo where you can come to exercise or unwind and enjoy the outdoors. Alongside walking paths and open lawns, the park is known for its collection of unique and fun beginner-friendly new sports. You won't need reservations provided the spaces are open, and simply register at the Administration Office to try your hand at mallet golf, a combination of croquet and mini golf on lush grass, challenge friends to a round of disc golf, an engaging sport that's suitable for all ages and much more. Across the park, shaded paths and open green spaces abound, making it a great stop before or after your visit to the Aquatics Centre.

The JRA Equestrian Park has been at the heart of Japanese equestrian sport for decades, and will once again host equestrian events during the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games. Originally developed as Japan's premier equestrian venue, it also hosted Olympic competition during the Tokyo 2020 Games.
Whether you're interested in horses or just want to spend time in one of Tokyo's most peaceful green spaces, the park is open year-round with free admission, except during the period of the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games. Expansive, lush lawns and the "Colorful Path" featuring seasonal flower displays make for a relaxed atmosphere, while families and children can enjoy a cute treehouse and open areas to play.
One of the park's greatest attractions is the chance to observe horses up close. Depending on the day's schedule, you may see horses exercising or ponies being cared for outdoors. The Musashino Natural Forest, preserved on the grounds since 1940, adds another layer to your visit, offering a glimpse of the natural landscape that once characterized this part of Tokyo.
The Main Office building is also worth visiting. Inside, the Horse Gallery introduces Japan's equestrian culture through exhibits suitable for all ages. You can enjoy drinks and light snacks at Café Stand on the first floor, but if you're looking for something more substantial, the restaurant rinato KITCHEN offers meals and refreshments with indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the Main Arena. Multiple times a year, the park also hosts events that bring people and horses together, making it more than just a competition venue – this is where Tokyo's equestrian tradition continues to thrive.

Continue exploring Tokyo's storied athletic facilities with a visit to Komazawa Olympic Park, originally built for the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. Today, this sporting heritage lives on through its gymnasium and facilities for soccer, baseball, swimming, tennis, jogging and cycling popular with local residents, alongside spacious lawns and tree-lined walking paths.
The free Tokyo Olympic Memorial Gallery offers another look at the city's sporting history, while families can enjoy Chiririn Course, a cycling area for children learning to ride. The park is a great place to unwind before continuing your day in Tokyo, or stay active while experiencing another chapter of the city’s Olympic legacy.
