Exploring Tokyo's Intersection of Culture and Urban Development: OIMACHI TRACKS and MoN Takanawa

OIMACHI TRACKS, MoN Takanawa:The Museum of Narratives

New landmarks continue to emerge in Tokyo, where station-connected design, cultural experiences and easy airport access are reshaping the way you can explore the city. Opened in March 2026, Oimachi Tracks and MoN Takanawa offer two very different reasons to head south from central Tokyo. Oimachi Tracks is a station-side urban complex with hotel stays, dining, wellness and train views. MoN Takanawa is a new cultural space where art, architecture and local stories come together.

As Japan continues construction on its next-generation linear motor car, these new developments show how Tokyo continues to grow around railways – not just for transportation, but for discovery and excitement.

Stay the Night, See Unique Views and Enjoy Urban Life Reimagined – OIMACHI TRACKS

Seconds from JR Oimachi Station, Oimachi Tracks is one of Tokyo’s newest examples of rail-linked urban design. The complex brings together a hotel, offices, residences, retail, dining and public spaces in a layout that is convenient and fun to explore from the second you arrive. The new JR Oimachi Tracks Exit connects the station directly to the development, and the "SHOPS & RESTAURANTS" outdoor mall lets you move between shops in a welcoming environment.

Just 30 minutes from Haneda Airport by train, Oimachi Tracks is a great place to stay the night, discover cuisine, shop or unwind. It's convenient before or after your flight, and makes an ideal base for exploring the Shinagawa and Tokyo waterfront areas.

Hotel Metropolitan Oimachi Tracks is a key part of the experience. The hotel has 285 rooms and a “FOREST COTTAGE” concept, giving the building a softer, more luxurious feel than a typical station-adjacent hotel, while remaining affordable. Some rooms have views of the train yard below, and for train fans, families with kids or anyone interested in how the city is connected by rail, these “Track View” rooms offer compelling views of a city in motion.

Higher up, “The TRAVELERS HOUSE ROOFTOP BAR” sits on the 26th floor with excellent views of Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree, Haneda Airport, Odaiba and the rail lines below. The bar has a deep green, forest-like atmosphere, with water features and a fireplace, creating a cozy nighttime setting where anyone can enjoy fun and innovative tiki drinks alongside a great view, even without staying the night.

Back along “SHOPS & RESTAURANTS“, Tachinomi 8 offers a more casual way to experience Oimachi’s food and drink scene. The standing bar serves selected sake, unique Japanese cocktails and small dishes that go beyond standard bar snacks. Pair fresh sashimi with inventive tapas-style plates or stop in for a quick drink. The standing-bar format gives it an approachable local feel, while the terrace makes it easy to enjoy the open-air design and open views.

Oimachi Tracks also includes “SAUNA METSÄ OIMACHI TRACKS“ – a facility complete with hot baths, cold plunges and relaxation spaces – making it a perfect stop if you want to add a wellness break to your Tokyo itinerary. Along Shop & Restaurants, the outdoor mall brings together everyday convenience and local flavor, with dining, shopping and places to pause between destinations. Oimachi Tracks, a hidden gem next door to Shinagawa, feels like a brand-new side of Tokyo hiding in plain sight – connected, exciting and in tune with Tokyo's evolution.

Explore Diverse Cultural Narratives to Understand Tokyo From a New Angle – MoN Takanawa

Just a six-minute walk from Takanawa Gateway Station, MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives offers a unique station-adjacent Tokyo experience. The museum's official slogan is "Transporting Culture for the next 100 years," and the name “MoN” stands for Museum of Narratives. The name also plays on the Japanese “mon” meaning gate, alongside “mon” referring to a question or query. The double meaning fits the location: a gateway into Tokyo that invites you to look at the city from a new angle.

Designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates, MoN is less a traditional museum and more an evolving cultural stage. The space changes regularly, with exhibitions, performances and programs shaped around broad themes, giving visitors a reason to return.

Inside, move through open atriums, exhibition areas and quiet spaces that invite you to slow down and simply experience the location. One highlight is a massive tatami area featuring mats made using recycled antibacterial tea leaves in their core material, promoting sustainability and cleanliness. The space is open to everyone and gives you a chance to sit, relax and experience a familiar part of Japanese daily culture.

MoN also makes the most of its railway and city views. From its Train Terrace, you can view multiple lines intersecting the area, take a moment to relax and ponder the myriad "narratives" of trains taking people places. On the rooftop, an eco-friendly footbath – heated by solar panels – is another great spot to rest your feet, slow down and take in the view, especially if you have spent the day walking. The rooftop also includes a garden space and shrine, adding small surprises to a building that blends culture, relaxation and urban scenery.

For visitors interested in Japanese performing arts, MoN’s rotating content includes not only exhibitions, performances and music festivals, but also traditional performing arts. Multilingual support is available, including English audio guides for certain programs, making it more approachable if you are still getting familiar with Japanese culture.

MoN Takanawa is close enough to combine with Oimachi Tracks in a single outing, showing how new Tokyo developments are moving beyond shopping alone. While Oimachi Tracks presents urban lifestyle, hotel comfort and station-side convenience, MoN Takanawa offers new ideas of culture, questions to ask and spaces to pause and relax. Both are new, easy to reach and still slightly under the radar – perfect locations to make your own unique discoveries.
