While many visitors to Tokyo tend to stick to Japan Railways (JR) lines because of the unlimited travel afforded by the Japan Rail Pass it needn’t be your only option. There are plenty of other train options that will take you around Tokyo and further afield. Research into the area you will be staying in and the places you want to visit. This will help you decide which train lines to use, and which discount pass to purchase.

Most train lines offer unlimited ride passes, and discounts for attractions and places of interest along its routes. If you plan to stay within and around Tokyo during your stay, consider the Greater Tokyo Pass . It offers you three days of unlimited travel around the metropolitan area, taking you as far as the temple complex of Nikko in the north, Narita Airport in the east, the mountains of Chichibu in the west, and Kamakura in the south.
