Experience the latest technological developments at Tokyo's new multi-use complex, Takanawa Gateway City, which opened to the public on March 27, 2025. The whole complex is a living laboratory of technological experiments. You can see new innovations in transportation and other fields.
At Takanawa Gateway City, you can enjoy exciting new developments in technology. There are small platform-like vehicles available in Gateway Park, the open space between The Linkpillar 1 buildings, that visitors can step on to ride from store to store.
The vehicles travel slowly enough to run on pedestrian walkways, including the promenade that connects the Takanawa Gateway City buildings, and some are powered by hydrogen. The mobility of the platforms increases accessibility by allowing users to move through buildings without having to walk. Because of their unique design and shape, they're a fun way for users to experience a new form of transportation. People of all ages can enjoy gliding over walkways while taking in the views of the park.
Takanawa Gateway City is home to Takanawa Gateway Link Scholars' Hub, or LiSH, which aims to realize a future where everyone lives happily and people coexist with robots. Along with the platform-like vehicles, there are robots throughout the complex. People with the Takanawa Gateway City app can buy drinks online that are delivered by robots to designated locations in Gateway Park. Security and cleaning robots are also used in the buildings' office spaces. These service robots give Takanawa Gateway City a futuristic feel and provide an image of a future where robots assist people with their daily lives.
The complex partners with businesses, universities, start-ups, and other players in various industries to take on these technological initiatives. Takanawa Gateway City often hosts demonstrations of new inventions and robots that may be implemented at the complex in the future. Be sure to check the official website for information about the latest events.
You can also take advantage of ride-share vans to explore the surrounding neighborhood. These vans function as miniature buses, taking users through narrow roads that are inaccessible via other forms of public transportation. They're an experiment in on-demand mobility and use AI to let users travel from their chosen location to desired destination using the shortest possible route. These vans are expected to be used for sightseeing nearby, including to visit the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum.

At The Linkpillar 1 South building, you'll find the Takanawa Gateway Travel Service Center. Here, you can find travel information about the Takanawa area, eastern Japan, and more.
The tablets installed at the counter provide information in 13 languages. The large touchscreen at the entrance introduces around 70 sightseeing spots across Japan and lets you take digital photos of yourself at these destinations. There are even virtual reality goggles that let you explore locations in northeast Japan.
A mock-up of a flying car is displayed outside the Travel Service Center. A video provides information about this next-generation vehicle. The helicopter-like flying cars are being considered as a future travel service, with plans to implement them in 2028.
They can fold down their rotors and be driven on the ground. They can also fly distances of around 400 kilometers and will let people travel easily to destinations in eastern Japan that are difficult to reach by bullet train. One day, there may even be flying taxis that carry people shorter distances.
Takanawa Gateway City has many multi-use spaces that host various events and pop-ups. To celebrate its grand opening, the complex will host a wide variety of unmissable events showcasing art, technology, food, and more. One limited-time option looks particularly exciting: a bar with kinetic art installations.
Zero-Site Takanawa Gateway is a bar with a focus on high-quality service and sustainability. The space features kinetic art installations and hosts events featuring art, fashion, design, and more. The art installations include lamps and light displays that light up at night, forming a sort of nighttime art museum. Customers can look at these displays while enjoying ethically sourced beverages and food.
The bar's furniture and interiors were built using recycled fibers and other materials. On Friday and Saturday nights, the bar also functions as a nightclub that hosts DJs from around the world. Zero-Site Takanawa Gateway will run until July 31, 2025.
Takanawa Gateway City is built above and around Takanawa Gateway Station, which opened in 2020 as the newest train station on the popular JR Yamanote Line. The Yamanote Line travels in a circle through some of Tokyo's most popular areas, such as Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Harajuku. Takanawa Gateway Station sits one stop away from the transportation hub of Shinagawa Station and is close to Haneda Airport. Takanawa Gateway City is home to shopping facilities, a convention center, a hotel, and a wide range of event spaces.
Takanawa Gateway City's shopping center, NEWoMan Takanawa, is beautifully designed to incorporate outdoor and green spaces. Visitors will be able to walk through balcony-like promenades while going into restaurants, beauty stores, fashion boutiques, and more. Two of the shops in the center opened in March 2025: a cafe, Blue Bottle Coffee, and lifestyle store, Nicolai Bergmann. Most of the other stores will open in autumn 2025, with the final stores opening in spring 2026.
March marked the opening of part of two interconnected buildings, together known as The Linkpillar 1. The other three buildings in the Takanawa Gateway City complex will be The Linkpillar 2, consisting of office floors, clinics, and commercial facilities; MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives, a cultural facility with performance spaces and exhibition halls; and Takanawa Gateway City Residence, a combination of residential units on the upper floors and an international school on the lower floors. These buildings are expected to open in early 2026.
Takanawa Gateway City's opening promises to turn the Takanawa area, only one stop away from the transportation hub of Shinagawa Station, into a major shopping and cultural destination. From exciting technological demonstrations to high-quality stores and services, this multi-use complex represents the future of Tokyo.
