Art aficionado? Beeline it for Tokyo’s top art-themed cafes, which run the gamut from dining-under-artwork eateries to interactive VR dining experiences. With the art comes good coffee, fine food, and succulent sweets.
NAKED, INC., a digital art collective known for its work at Kyoto's Nijo Castle and Tokyo's Kanda Shrine, used its expertise to create this cafe combining art and food. Forest-like decorations mirror the seasons, creating a delightful setting in which to enjoy healthy meals. (Takeout okay.) Dinnertime involves VR, projection mapping and music. Indeed, meals turned artwork with projection mapping are a sight to see.
This Ryogoku-area cafe, a modern take on an old-Tokyo teahouse, fuses old with new and art with dining by decorating its interior with Jacquard-woven versions of Hokusai’s Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji ukiyo-e (woodblock) prints. The cafe both exhibits and sells art, so you can leave lunch with unique Tokyo souvenirs.
ORI TOKYO serves standard cafe items, plus caffè shakerato, Japanese and Western desserts, hot lunch sets and more.
Savor healthy meals surrounded by art on Tokyo’s Tennozu Isle. The expansive gallery space showcases up-and-coming artists in Japan. Works on display—available for purchase—are constantly updated, so there’s always something new to enjoy.
The menu features lunch sets as well as individual dishes, like pasta and dessert, and craft beer.
