Once you get off at JR Shinjuku station, head towards the new south exit. Shop at specialty stores such as Shinjuku Takashimaya, Tokyu Hands, and Yuzawaya in Takashimaya Times Square. After, head to the east exit. Get a hold of sightseeing information at the Tokyo Tourist Information Center, then head on to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, which features a free observation deck on the 45th floor. Go around to the department store district at the east exit, and then continue on to Kabukicho, Japan’s premiere nightlife district.

Takashimaya Times Square, located at the new south exit, is one of the largest shopping centers. Besides the well-established Shinjuku Takashimaya department store, all kinds of stores grace the spacious floors of the building, complete with items from every genre to choose from. This includes Tokyu Hands, a popular specialty store where you can buy Japanese souvenirs, and Yuzawaya, complete with hobby materials, handicraft supplies, and fabrics from all over the word.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building is the administrative center of Tokyo. This 243-meter twin tower, which rises the highest among the buildings in the heart of Nishi-Shinjuku, was designed by the late Kenzo Tange. On the very first floor of Main Building No. 1 is the Tokyo Tourist Information Center, which carries multilingual materials on sightseeing spots in Tokyo. The government building is famous for the superb view from the free observation deck on the 45th floor. On a clear day, you can even see Mt. Fuji and the romantic night view is also popular.

The east exit of Shinjuku is lined with the historical Isetan Shinjuku Department Store, Shinjuku Marui Honkan Main Store, Marui Curren, Marui One, Marui Annex, and Marui Men, which are popular with young people. Check out the latest fashion and trendy sundries for ladies and men. Buy specially chosen gourmet products, confectioneries, and bento lunch boxes in the department store basement and have a refreshing lunch in the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden./p>

As the premiere nightlife district in Japan, Kabukicho is lined with taverns, bars, theaters, and entertainment spots, and at night, students and office workers fill the area. It is maintained and patrolled by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, making it safe and relaxing for people to freely enjoy the nightlife.
