Northern Tokyo's bustling shopping and entertainment hub

Serving locals and commuters from the North, Ikebukuro is a popular shopping destination, with lively, inexpensive bars and restaurants as far as the eye can see. The area also rivals Akihabara for electronics stores and anime goods, especially along "Otome Road".

General Tips

  • Check your exits from the station carefully; the East Exit is dominated by Seibu Ikebukuro department store and the West Exit is home to Tobu Department Store
  • Escape the crowds at Minami Ikebukuro Park, a wide, green space with plenty of seating and a popular cafe
  • With several universities in the area, food is cheap and the battle for best ramen is intense; there's always a line outside Mutekiya, on the east side

Meet at the owl

Ikebukuro Station

Among the busiest stations in Tokyo and indeed, the world, navigating the station can be confusing. Head for the East Exit near Seibu Ikebukuro department store. The “Ikefukuro” owl statue is a popular meeting spot on the east side, near the North Exit.

Follow the crowds along this popular shopping street to find Sunshine City, a large commercial complex featuring the towering Sunshine 60 building. Besides shopping, you'll find cinemas, bowling, karaoke and late-night bars, cat and owl cafes, regular cafes… no wonder it's popular with local students at all hours.

Kids will love the large Pokémon Center here. Check out Namjatown, with electronic games, an area dedicated to desserts and an area dedicated to gyoza pot stickers. There's plenty of fun for adults too, with shopping, city views and a wide range of restaurants.

A park in the sky that you can visit 365 days a year

Sunshine 60 Observatory Tenbou-Park

Head up to the top of the Sunshine 60 building to find Sunshine 60 Observatory Tenbou-Park. It's fun anytime, but best around sunset when you can see all of Tokyo sparkling below. The nearby World Import Mart Building, located in the same complex, has an excellent aquarium and a planetarium on its rooftop.
