The Sumida River Toro Nagashi (Lantern-Floating Ceremony) is a summer tradition held to comfort the souls of those who lost their lives in the Great Kanto Earthquake and wartime devastation, as well as to pray for peace. Paper lanterns are released from the Sumida River Shinsui Terrace near Azumabashi Bridge, which spans the river between Taito and Sumida wards.
You can purchase your own paper lantern, write a message on it, and float it down the river. Contact the Asakusa Tourism Federation or the Sumida Tourism Association for details about how to get your own lantern.
The sight of paper lanterns floating quietly along the tranquil Sumida River at dusk creates a magical scenery that allows you to feel the history and prayers of Tokyo.
