Niijima Island, which specializes in the production of glass, hosts the annual Niijima International Glass Art Festival from late October to early November. Glassmaking artists and students from Japan and abroad are invited to the festival to take part in workshops, demonstrations, and lectures. The festival, held for more than 30 years now, has gained recognition in the glass-working community for featuring cutting-edge work by international artists.
