Zenmyoji Temple 善明寺

1-5-4 Honmachi, Fuchu City, Tokyo

Your current location:

Zenmyoji Temple is a temple belonging to the Anraku Rippo School of Tendai Buddhism. It holds an iron statue of Amitabha Buddha cast in 1253 that has been designated as an important national cultural treasure (not usually available general viewing). The former residence of mid-Edo period Shinto theologian Iori Ida was built on what is today the site of Zenmyoji Temple. The words engraved on the stone monument in front of the temple gate caution visitors not to bring distractingly fragrant vegetables or alcohol onto the temple grounds. You can see the graves of Iori Iida and imperial restoration activist Sanemitsu Saionji at the temple cemetery, and it has been designated as a historical site of Tokyo.
