Zenmyoji Temple 善明寺

1-5-4 Honmachi, Fuchu City, Tokyo

Visit Zenmyoji Temple for a dose of traditional Japanese culture. It holds a statue of Amitabha Buddha cast in 1253 and has been designated as an important national cultural treasure. The former residence of mid-Edo period Shinto theologian Iori Ida was built on what is today the site of Zenmyoji Temple. The engraving on the stone monument in front of the temple gate cautions visitors not to bring distractingly fragrant vegetables or alcohol onto the temple grounds. You can see the graves of Iori Iida and imperial restoration activist Sanemitsu Saionji at the temple cemetery, and it has been designated as a historical site of Tokyo.
