Higo-Hosokawa Garden 肥後細川庭園

1-1-22 Mejirodai, Bunkyo City, Tokyo

Get a taste of times-past at this peaceful garden retreat

Located along the Kanda River, Higo-Hosokawa Garden offers you a peek at Japanese traditional gardens and feudal history.

Higo-Hosokawa Garden is a great option when you need to get away from the mayhem of Tokyo. You can take a leisurely stroll around the ponds and enjoy the sound of running water at the waterfall. And while it is nowhere near the size of places like Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, this garden is just as beautiful. With pastel-pink sakura (cherry blossoms) in spring, Japanese irises in early summer, crimson momiji (maple trees) in fall, and yukitsuri ropework in winter, there is much to enjoy at Higo-Hosokawa Garden, no matter the season.

Autumn colors are visible on the leaves of hazenoki (wax trees), enoki (Chinese hackberry), and momiji (maple trees) around late November to early December. Yukitsuri, distinctive Japanese ropework to keep snow suspended off the pine trees, can be seen from late November to mid-March.
