A striking volcanic cliff overlooking the sea

Nippana Shinzan is a formation of hardened lava jutting into the ocean on the southern tip of Miyakejima Island. This enormous rock face emerged here in just one night during an erruption in 1983. From the ocean side, you can see where wave erosion has exposed beautiful red and black striations in the volcanic rock.
