Tokyo Metropolitan Government No.1 Building 東京都庁舎第一本庁舎

2-8-1 Nishi Shinjuku Shinjuku-ku Tokyo

Observe Tokyo from the center of the city

Visit the Tokyo Metropolitan Government No. 1 Building, home to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government—it's just a short walk from Shinjuku Station. Less famous than its cousins Tokyo Tower and TOKYO SKYTREE, the building's twin towers each have an observatory at a height of 202 meters. Better yet, admission to both observatories is free.

Note: The North Observatory is currently closed. It will reopen in mid-January 2020.

  • See stunning views of Tokyo, from Tokyo Bay to Mt. Fuji
  • Enjoy nighttime drinks above Tokyo at the North Observatory's cafe and bar

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government No. 1 Building's upper floors are split across two towers, a north tower and a south tower. Each has an observatory on the 45th floor. Open until 22:30, the North Observatory is a good place for nighttime views, and is home to a bar and a cafe.

From the observatory, you can see Tokyo landmarks such as TOKYO SKYTREE, Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Bay, and sometimes even Mt. Fuji. Maps around the edge of the observatory point out significant landmarks to look out for.

The best views can be seen in early morning in autumn and winter, as the air is cooler and less hazy.

The observatory also has a gift shop selling Tokyo souvenirs, making the towers the perfect destination if you've only got time to check out one place in Tokyo and need proof of your visit.

On certain days, if you're lucky enough, you might find a local produce fair in the lobby of the building. Make sure to try some produce from regional Japan.
