In order to prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), various facilities around Tokyo may change their operating days or hours. In addition, some events may be canceled or postponed. Please check official facility or event websites for the latest updates and information.
Sumida Aquarium aims to give visitors a close and intimate view of aquarium life. The Ogasawara Tank, themed around Tokyo's tropical island chain, showcases schools of vivid and colorful fish. There's one of Japan's largest indoor pool-type tanks, where you can get close enough to penguins and fur seals to feel them breathe. And there's the otherworldly "Big Petri Dish," a tank containing around 500 jellyfish. You can deepen your understanding of the aquarium's residents in the kitchen, where food is prepared for them, and in the lab, where jellyfish are bred.
The "Big Petri Dish" tank was introduced in 2020, following the aquarium's renewal. The dreamlike sight of jellyfish is one of Sumida Aquarium's new highlights. At the on-site Penguin Cafe, you can enjoy original drinks. And if you're visiting at night, you can even grab an alcoholic drink to sip as you wander around.
