Many Japanese firsts in this popular department store
Matsuzakaya is one of Japan's historical department stores. This branch introduced "elevator girls" to Japan—neatly dressed ladies in the elevators opening and closing doors and giving directions to customers—and was also Japan's first building designed to be connected directly to the subway. Access to the building is extremely easy by train.
Browse the underground supermarket and the many clothing and lifestyle stores—note that the brands at Matsuzakaya are mostly Japanese. Throughout the year, Matsuzakaya Ueno's event hall holds various exhibitions and special markets for bargains. Many of them are seasonal.
There is a tourist information center introducing the Ueno area on the second floor. The department store also offers a wide range of panda merchandise appropriate for Ueno.
