A Pop Culture Trendsetter
Akihabara Electric Town began as a small 1 km2 area near JR Akihabara Station densely packed with 1,000 electronics stores. Over time, it has transformed into the now legendary destination known worldwide simply as “Akiba”—a pop culture trendsetter packed with specialty shops selling computers, anime, manga and more.
Tips
- Take it all in, from the famous shops selling computers, anime and manga to niche specialty shops in the back alleys
- When you go for a stroll through “Electric Town,” visit the nearby historic shrines and temples such as Kanda Myojin Shrine
- Enjoy exploring a pedestrian paradise on Sundays each week
Chuo-dori Street is lined with shops selling computers, anime, manga, games, figures and more. Plus, the alleyway just off the main road is full of niche specialty shops for dedicated fans, selling retro games, computer parts, and more.
There are many historic temples and shrines nearby, such as Kanda Myojin Shrine, and large crowds pack the streets here at New Year and during festivals.
Akihabara is closed to vehicle traffic on Sundays, and it becomes a lively pedestrian paradise with visitors from all around the world. It is open to pedestrians from 13:00 to 18:00 from April to September, and from 13:00 to 17:00 from October to March.
