Functional elegance, traditional design
Since its founding in 1946, Kataoka Byoubu Shop has focused entirely on producing byoubu, traditional Japanese folding screens. A showroom on the same premises as the workshop here serves as a small local museum showcasing the traditional tools and methods used to create these screens.
Along with enjoying various exhibitions from small screens to gilded masterpieces, visitors can also experience the mysterious karakuri byoubu — "trick" folding screens that change designs when folded a certain way. Souvenir screens and custom screens are also available to order.
