Kataoka Byoubu 屏風博物館

Code Building K2, 1-31-6 Mukojima, Sumida-ku, Tokyo

Functional elegance, traditional design

Byoubu, or folding screens, are an integral part of classic Japanese interior design. Ranging from simple, austere designs to extravagant gilded masterpieces, Kataoka Byoubu’s permanent collection includes more than eighty unique folding screens, organized by era.

The museum is particularly proud of their selection of karakuri byoubu - "trick" folding screens which change designs when folded a certain way. The museum also has a display of traditional tools, materials and construction methods used to make these functional art pieces.

For a truly one-of-a-kind souvenir, Kataoka Byoubu offers classes to make your own mini folding screen. (Classes require advance registration and may not be available in English. Please contact the museum for further details.)
