Sweeping views of the volcanic coast

On the east side of Miyakejima Island is Satado-misaki Promontory—a lookout point that stands atop rugged cliffs 20 meters above the ocean. The unusual shape of the promontory was formed when the waves eroded the lava that flowed into the sea. A chalk-white lighthouse overlooks the promontory.
