A charming garden on Tokyo’s outskirts
The Machida Dahlia Garden is a charming park serving the primarily residential area of Machida, about two hours away from central Tokyo on public transport.
Machida City built the gardens with the local community in mind, not just as a green oasis spread over 15,000 square meters, but also as a place of employment for people with cognitive disabilities. You can find some 500 types of dahlia here, and buy seedlings to take home. The garden is generally open between late June and early November, but exact dates change from year to year so double check at a tourist information center before visiting. If you are in the area, consider visiting the large flea market at Machida Tenmangu Shrine on the first day of the month.
