A sanctuary of learning dedicated to Confucius
Yushima Seido, also known as The Mausoleum of Confucius at Yushima, is a place dedicated to Confucius. Built in 1690, it is located in the peaceful neighborhood of Yushima, not far from Akihabara. A center of Confucian thought, it also served as a training school for Tokugawa officials during the Edo period (1603-1867).
The temple was the birthplace of the Normal School (now Tsukuba University) and Tokyo Women's Normal School (now Ochanomizu University) and heavily influenced the modern school system. Because of its focus on education, Yushima Seido is popular with students, who come to pray for good luck and success in school, especially during school entrance exam time.
