A close up of Japan Airlines and its aircraft
The free hangar tours that Japan Airlines offers have been popular since they first started in the 1950s, but a renovation and the opening of a new exhibition space in 2013 saw the tours frequently top the lists of things to do in the capital. If you’re a fan of air travel or Japanese engineering or you're looking for a unique, free tour in Tokyo, don't miss this tour.
The new space offers a walkthrough of the airline’s history, including decades of uniform designs, in-flight magazines, and model aircraft. There are hands-on experiences where you can try out different JAL jobs or take pictures in authentic uniforms. Of course, the highlight of the visit is still the hangar area, where you can get a firsthand look at the behemoth vehicles as they undergo maintenance and checks.
Although the tour is free, it’s reservation only due to its overwhelming popularity, so be sure to check availability and book ahead of time.
