The Sumida Hokusai Museum すみだ北斎美術館

A museum dedicated to Katsushika Hokusai—one of the world's most respected artists—and located in his birthplace

This museum features the works of famed ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai and his disciples. It opened in 2016 in Sumida City, where Hokusai was born and spent most of his life. Hokusai's art is in the style of ukiyo-e, a genre which was popular during the Edo period and translates to "pictures of the floating world." These woodblock prints and paintings focus on distinct aspects of Japanese culture during that time. Hokusai is most famous for his print known as "Under the Wave off Kanagawa," from the series "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji."
The museum contains a permanent exhibition featuring full-size high-resolution replicas of Hokusai's art with touch panels and multilingual information about his life and work. Hokusai's original art can be seen in the museum's special planning exhibitions that change throughout the year. The four-story museum is a piece of art in itself, a remarkable example of modern architecture designed by famed Japanese architect Sejima Kazuyo. It also features a museum shop and a library where you can browse books on Japanese art, especially ukiyo-e.
