How to “Hello Tokyo”

Check out these tips for having fun in Tokyo!

Throw your trash in a trash can.

Check the labels on trash cans and put your trash in the correct trash cans. If there aren't any nearby, carry your trash with you.

If there are no public bins, common courtesy dictates that individuals pick up and take away their own waste.

Be considerate of people around you.

When you take a picture, be considerate of the people around you. Don't take pictures in places where you're not allowed to. The moment will stay in your memories.

Asking for permission before taking a photo of someone is considered good manners. Be aware of your surroundings to avoid accidental injury.

Stay quiet in public places.

Keep your voice low in public buildings and on public transportation, such as the train or the bus. Refrain from talking on your phone.

In public spaces, it is considered polite to refrain from loud behavior.

Get in line.

When you're at a restaurant or on the escalator, wait in line and don't cut.
Waiting can be fun, too.

Please queue in an orderly fashion. If you arrive after friends or family who are already queuing, it is polite to all go to the back of the queue if wishing to stay together.

Don't bring food inside restaurants.

When you go to a restaurant, savor their cooking. Bringing food from outside and taking home leftovers are usually not allowed.

Be mindful of and follow each restaurant's rules. If unsure, please ask the staff.

Keep the toilet clean.

Put toilet paper in the toilet, not in the trash can. Keep the toilet clean for the people who will use it after you.

Common courtesy requires that you leave the toilet in the manner in which you would wish to find it.

Take off your shoes.

Some buildings don't let you walk with your shoes on in some areas. Try feeling tatami and other traditional Japanese floors with your feet.

It is both customary and polite to remove one's footwear when entering a room or walking on tatami (straw mats). Check with the staff if you are not sure.

No need to tip.

You don't need to tip when you pay at a restaurant, at a store, or in a taxi. Just smile and say, "Arigatou."

Basically, tipping is not customary in restaurants or while shopping, etc.

Take good care of cultural properties.

Temples and shrines have delicate historical cultural properties. Don't touch things that you shouldn't, just look at them.

Damage to cultural or other property is subject to punishment under the law.
