Shop for souvenirs against the backdrop of Tokyo's oldest temple

The Nakamise shopping avenue is a 250-meter long path that leads from the Kaminarimon Gate to the Hozomon Gate of Tokyo's oldest temple, Sensoji. About 90 stalls selling souvenirs, traditional goods and snacks line the street in Asakusa.

The Nakamise shopping avenue–one of the oldest shopping streets in all of Japan– replicates the vibe of an Edo-period downtown area, but with both traditional and modern items on sale. You will be able to buy Japanese clogs and kokeshi wooden dolls, and also the ever-popular fashionable Anello bags.


Jostle with the crowds as you shop and snack your way through the street towards Sensoji during the day, but do make it a point to return after dinner to see the street transformed. You will be rewarded by the beautiful mural paintings on the drawn shutters of the Nakamise stalls. The "Asakusa picture scroll" depicts the history of Sensoji through drawings of seasonal events.
