To mark August 8, 2026 (Reiwa 8, 8/8—a date resonating with "Hachi, Hachi, Hachi"), the HACHI-8 PROJECT has been launched to pass on the story of Shibuya's iconic symbol, Hachiko, to future generations. As part of the project, HACHI-8 PROJECT 2026 will take place over three days, from Friday, August 7, to Sunday, August 9, 2026.
The theme for the inaugural event is "ART."
The exhibition features 88+ works by 88 artists selected by 8 curators. This new urban cultural project transforms the experience of walking through, exploring, and encountering Shibuya into an experience of art appreciation.
The main venue is the second floor of Building A at Seibu Shibuya Store, with additional satellite venues throughout Shibuya City. As visitors explore the venues, they can experience diverse perspectives and artistic expressions while discovering new aspects of Shibuya.
The HACHI-8 PROJECT goes beyond an art exhibition to create a space where the city, culture, and people come together, offering a uniquely Shibuya experience of exploring the city.
[About the HACHI-8 PROJECT]
Even after his owner, Professor Ueno, passed away, Hachiko continued to wait for his return outside the ticket gates at Shibuya Station for years. Inspired by his unwavering devotion, the Hachiko Statue has long served as one of Shibuya's most beloved meeting places, holding a special place in the memories and everyday lives of countless people. The HACHI-8 PROJECT reinterprets the cultural significance of meeting and gathering in a contemporary context, connecting the city and its people, people with one another, and people with culture through art.
The project was also launched to help pass on the story of Hachiko, an iconic symbol of Shibuya, to future generations.
