Your current location:

Northern Tokyo

Akabane

Oji Inari-jinja Shrine holds a kite market on each day of the horse (according to the lunar calendar) in February. The market's roots lie in the Edo period (1603–1867), during which large fires broke out frequently. Because kites cut through wind, locals believed they were lucky charms that possessed the ability to ward off fires. In the present day, this annual market honors those traditional beliefs.
