Japanese animation, also known as "anime," is a pop culture phenomenon that has captivated people of all ages around the world. This year, iconic anime characters Doraemon and Astro Boy will be honored with their own official shops and cafes in Tokyo. Come and relive the nostalgia of early classic anime!

Remembering the Showa era's beloved robot boy at Tezuka Osamu Shop & Cafe

Located in Asakusa, Tezuka Osamu Shop & Cafe (or "Atom-do Honpo" in Japanese) is a perfect addition to the neighborhood's retro vibe. The shop is a tribute to famous manga (comics) author Osamu Tezuka—often called "The God of Manga"—and his internationally-renowned masterpiece, Astro Boy.

On the first floor, you can buy merchandise themed after Tezuka Osamu's work, including retro-looking Astro Boy memo pads, mug cups, and sukajan (Japanese bomber jackets).

On the second floor is the cafe, where visitors can sit at a counter or on a traditional tatami floor. (Be sure to take off your shoes!) The cafe is equipped with electrical outlets and internet access. You can download an exclusive app to read Tezuka Osamu's manga in eight different languages.

Feeling hungry? Enjoy Astro Boy pancakes topped with sweet red bean paste and shiratama (ball-shaped rice cakes). Or, if you're in the mood for something heartier, try the curry rice. Relive the nostalgia of days gone by and learn about the man that's known to have redefined manga and anime.

Japan's iconic blue robot cat makes a comeback at the Doraemon Future Department Store

Celebrating 50 years since the creation of Japan's beloved Doraemon, the new Doraemon Future Department Store in Odaiba opened in December 2019. Here, children and adults alike can enjoy the magic of the series!

The store is divided into three main areas for guests to explore. First, step into the Secret Gadget Lab where you can play with Doraemon's famous gadgets such as the Anywhere Door and the Take-copter!

The Customization Zone is where you can create your own, unique custom Doraemon goods to take home. For example, you can put your name on the goods like towels by or embroidery or carving. Finally, stop by the Shop Zone (and Book corner) to browse through and buy exclusive Doraemon merchandise including Doraemon comics and related books.
