The megalopolis of Tokyo extends westward into the mountains, making it a city where you can experience both urban exploration and wilderness appreciation. Mt. Takao, the best known of Tokyo's mountains, boasts well-maintained hiking trails, an ancient temple and hands-on experiences. It's also a great place to admire Tokyo's springtime sakura (cherry blossoms).
Make the most of your time on the mountain with the help of Takaone and Takao Mountain House (TMH.), two facilities providing a variety of activities and services from craft workshops to takeout lunches that will help you enjoy Mt. Takao to the fullest.
Opened in 2021, Takaone is part hotel and dining establishment and part activity base. The facility collaborates with local craftspeople and guides to provide a variety of activities, including leathercraft and ceramics workshops, sunrise hikes, custom hikes and nature tours (English available).
TMH., opened in 2022 in a repurposed house, offers SDG-friendly midday meals packed in reusable containers. The locally produced lunches, part of the facility's To Mountain service, can be reserved via the For Early Birds (FEB) website in advance or ordered on-site in the morning. You can even rent bottles and growlers perfect for coffee and craft beer. Beer, coffee and sandwiches can also be enjoyed on the facility's wooden deck.
