Harajuku is one of the most well-known centers of fashion, shopping, and kawaii culture in Tokyo. It’s also a great place for sightseeing, with Yoyogi Park and Meiji Jingu Shrine nearby. Tokyu Plaza Harajuku, known as Harakado, will open on April 17, 2024, on the corner of the bustling Jingumae intersection. This “kado” (corner) is a place where people can come together to create and enjoy Harajuku culture. It is home to 75 stores, spread across nine floors, including a rooftop terrace.

Harakado, the new cultural corner of Harajuku

Harajuku is an area famous for its mix of kawaii culture, street fashion, and luxury shopping. The Jingumae area of Harajuku has long been a place where top creators have come together to communicate and collaborate.
Tokyu Plaza Harajuku, known as Harakado, is a new creative facility located on the corner of the Jingumae intersection that will open on April 17, 2024. Harakado is a creative hub, where creators from a variety of fields, including fashion, photography, design, movies, advertising, and magazines come together to collaborate and share ideas.
This new development looks to channel the spirit of the Harajuku Central Apartment, a co-creation space that existed at the same Jingumae intersection in the 1960s. It is a part of Tokyu Land Corporation’s Project Life Land Shibuya initiative which aims to develop the area, and will collaborate with Tokyu Plaza Omotesando, or Omokado, (formerly Tokyu Plaza Omotesando Harajuku) on the opposite corner of the Jingumae intersection.
In Japanese, the word “kado” evokes multiple meanings, including “corner,” “gate,” and “talent.” Harakado is the corner where talented and creative people can meet, and a gateway to experiencing Harajuku culture. It also brings to mind the striking entrance gate of the nearby Meiji Jingu Shrine.

The facility covers a total floor area of nearly 20,000 square meters, spread over nine floors. From the basement floor to the second floor you’ll find a range of shops and stores, including a number of high-end brands. There’s also a sento (public bath) called Kosugiyu on the basement floor.
On the second floor there is a hangout area and meeting space called Cover, where you can browse a collection of around 3,000 old and new magazines.
The Creators’ Platform on the third floor is a space where creative companies and people can meet, collaborate, and explore new business ideas. The fourth floor is home to a project called Harappa, which provides a place to “chill out” while experiencing Harajuku culture and nature.
There’s a food court on the fifth and sixth floors, with a variety of dining options, including izakaya bars with a back-alley atmosphere. Be sure to visit the rooftop terrace, a pleasant green space that overlooks the bustling Jingumae intersection.
