Are you looking for unique things to do in Tokyo, while still beating the summer heat? If so, why not explore western Tokyo, also called the Tama area? This region is cooler than the city, less crowded, and filled with hidden gems that align with modern sustainable travel values. In contrast to the skyscrapers that many people associate with central Tokyo, much of the Tama area is characterized by its nature, including mountains, rivers, and forests. Unsurprisingly, the region is a hotspot for hiking in Tokyo, as well as other outdoor activities. Given its slower pace of life, it is also an excellent place to more deeply explore local communities.

Connect With Nature and Local Cultures

Tokyo Mountain Tours is a tour company that offers sustainable experiences in the Tama area. Through these tours, which are led by local guides, you can immerse yourself in regional cultures, discover Tokyo’s green side, and support local communities. A popular summertime activity is the company’s River Clean Rafting, which combines river rafting with periodic stops to pick up garbage, allowing you to help preserve the river’s cleanliness while having fun. In late summer this year, Tokyo Mountain Tours is also planning to unveil a Mt. Mitake hiking course with an English guide. This experience will introduce the area’s Shinto culture and incorporate stops at local establishments, enabling you to both learn about and economically support the area. You can find more information about the company’s English tours on its English Instagram.

Savor Elegant Cuisine Built Upon Sustainable Values

Imagine sitting in a restaurant crafted with locally-sourced wood. Earthy aromas scent the air as you dine on a French course lunch prepared from local produce. Through large windows, you are granted peaceful views of the Tama River flanked by greenery. Welcome to Satologue. Started in May 2024, this sustainability-focused initiative is refurbishing vacant village houses in western Tokyo to help revitalize the region and promote tourism. Presently, Satologue’s restaurant—open for lunch only—and firewood sauna are open, with accommodation options coming in 2025. In addition to meals, the facility also offers a guided 15-minute field walking course where you can explore its homegrown produce nourished by a tributary of the Tama River. Observe tomatoes, eggplant, mushrooms, and even a small wasabi field. Please note that reservations are required for the restaurant and sauna.

Support Communities With Tasty Cafe Eats

Support up-and-coming food entrepreneurs and enjoy creative dishes in a chic, wooden dining space at MUKU CAFE. Established in January 2024, this family-friendly eatery serves Italian cuisine during weekdays, and opens its space on weekends to aspiring restaurateurs—many of whom are local mothers—who favor the use of natural ingredients. By eating at the cafe on the weekend, you can feel confident that your cafe visit supports these locals' business dreams. Check the official website beforehand to review the weekend menus, which change daily alongside each guest chef. There are also free outdoor and indoor kids’ play areas next to the cafe that connects children to nature, making it a great place for families.
