The Shimokitazawa area —known as "Shimokita" for short—has made a name for itself as a trendy hub for cool fashion, live music, and unique establishments that you aren't likely to find elsewhere in Tokyo. The area is undergoing redevelopment of the old Odakyu line, with several new shopping, dining, community space, leisure facilities and hotels opening until 2021. Among the newest additions to the Shimokita scene are Shimokita Senrogai Akichi, and Shimokita Eki-Ue.

Life in the Slow Lane at Shimokita Senrogai Akichi

Located just a few hundred meters from Shimokitazawa Station's east exit, Shimokita Senrogai Akichi is an open area where locals and visitors alike can gather to play, sip coffee, or just hang out. With plenty of tables and chairs, it's a great place to send out a few emails while enjoying a hot drink—or maybe to enjoy some rosemary-infused vodka cocktails after work.
During the day, Akichi is popular among families with kids. In the evening, it draws local college students as well as travelers staying at the many nearby hostels. Anyone is welcome to stop by, including pets!
Though relatively quiet on weekdays, Akichi gets busy on weekends, as it hosts local community events. From its small pick-as-you-like garden and orchard, to the events held at the stage area, to its ever-rotating food trucks, Akichi is definitely a happening place to be.
Foodies won't want to miss the rental kitchen, where aspiring chefs and restaurateurs can rent space for at least half a day to do a test-run before opening a fully-fledged eatery. For early risers, don't miss radio calisthenics at 8:35 each morning—it's a fun and very Japanese way to start the day, and helps to bring the Shimokitazawa community and guests together.

Convenient and Cool Shopping and Dining at Shimokita Eki-Ue

Both the Odakyu and Inokashira Lines run through Shimokitazawa Station, making it a convenient jump-off point to get around Tokyo. But there's plenty to see and do at Shimokitazawa Station itself.
With 16 shops and restaurants, Shimokita Eki-Ue is located just above the Odakyu Line side of the station. Restaurant offerings include yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), German beer and bread, Thai cuisine, and spicy tantanmen noodles. Once you've eaten, explore to discover gourmet coffee, T-shirts, interior goods, and more. Keep your eyes peeled for the cute illustrations decorating the walls of Shimokita Eki-Ue, which feature depictions of locals enjoying Shimokitazawa life.
