The month of June marks the arrival of tsuyu, Japan's humid rainy season. While that may dampen the spirits of some, there is a silver lining within the clouds: colorful hydrangeas, known as ajisai in Japanese. The stunning bunches of blue, pink, and purple blooms spread across Tokyo are sure to put a smile on your face, no matter the weather.
Notice of Permanent Closure
Toshimaen will permanently close on August 31, 2020.
Not only is Toshimaen one of Japan's largest amusement parks, but it is also home to a beautiful collection of seasonal flowers. In early summer, head to the northern section of the park to find the hydrangea garden. It contains around 150 types of hydrangeas. Toshimaen's hydrangea festival lasts from May 25 to June 24, during which you can ride the park’s miniature train through the vibrant blooms. Garden staff are on hand to provide guided tours, and there are short talks led by flower specialists.
Located in western Tokyo, the historic Takahata Fudoson Kongoji Temple is located at the foot of a mountain. This scenic spot showcases about 200 varieties of hydrangeas. The temple has recently refurbished its walking path and expanded its hydrangea garden, so make sure to stop by to appreciate the upgrades. During the temple's hydrangea festival throughout the month of June, there will be various events, including a photography contest, haiku and tanka poetry readings, and a quiz on the 88 notable spots within the temple grounds.
