At customs areas such as airports, where goods haven't passed through border control, you can buy from duty-free stores that don't charge customs duties and other taxes. Buying duty-free is different from the tax-free system that applies to stores in Tokyo that don't charge consumption taxes. Based on where and how you make a purchase, you can find the best tax-based bargain.
Unlike tax-free shopping, duty-free shopping involves very little paper work—just the presentation of your passport and your flight ticket (or other proof you are departing Japan). The goods you purchase will be ready for you to pick up at one of the major airports. In some cases, the purchase of duty-free goods may only be available for customers departing from Haneda or Narita Airport.
