The terminal buildings of Haneda and Narita and many of the train and bus companies offer free Wi-Fi, along with many of the major tourist facilities. Registration procedures vary—some require an email address, a social networking account, and some have a time limit—and service ranges from good to patchy. The service is often available in a number of languages to help you connect with maximum ease.
You can find free Wi-Fi spots at many public transportation hubs, including stations on the Tokyo Metro and JR stations.
Free Wi-Fi in Tokyo is also available at many of the city’s parks, museums, zoos, and gardens.
Choose from a number of free apps—including Japan Connected-free Wi-Fi and Travel Japan Wi-Fi —to find and connect to Wi-Fi spots around the city.
Wi-Fi Hotspot Guide
Probably the easiest and most convenient way to stay connected throughout your stay in Tokyo is to pick up a pocket Wi-Fi. Haneda and Narita Airports both have kiosks offering various rental plans to suit your need. In some cases, if you book in advance, the Wi-Fi unit can be delivered directly to your hotel. Ordering a unit before you arrive in the country is often cheaper as the fares don’t include the airport taxes etc.
Pick up a travel sim from Haneda or Narita Airport as soon as you land. There are various kiosks and even vending machines that offer travel sims on various plans. Tokyo’s electronics megastores BIC Camera and Yodobashi Camera also stock a range of travel sim cards that you can snap straight into your unlocked phone. Prices vary depending on the plan, but expect to pay between 3,000 and 8,000 yen. Ask the store staff—many of who are bilingual—for more details and recommendations. Online research into the various price plans provided by different companies will give you an idea of how much you will be expected to pay. In some cases, there are free sim options for visitors to Tokyo. Conditions always apply, so research the best deal for you.
