Located within Setagaya ward in western Tokyo, Futako Tamagawa is an area of modern shopping and greenery built along the banks of the Tama River. An ideal spot for family picnics or long lunch dates, the area is particularly busy when hundreds of thousands of people come to watch the Setagaya City Tama River Fireworks Festival.

How to Get There

The closest access point is Futako Tamagawa Station, accessible via the Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line and the Tokyu Oimachi Line.

From Haneda Airport: 55 minutes by train. One hour and five minutes by limousine bus to Futako Tamagawa Station.
From Narita Airport: Two hours by train. Three hours and 30 minutes by limousine bus to Futako Tamagawa Station.
From Shinjuku Station: Take the JR Yamanote Line to Shibuya Station. From there, change to the express train on the Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line and get off at Futako Tamagawa Station. The entire trip takes approximately 30 minutes.
From Tokyo Station: Take the JR Yamanote Line to Shibuya Station. From there, change to the express train on the Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line and get off at Futako Tamagawa Station. The entire trip takes approximately 45 minutes.

Japanese products are known for their minimal, practical design, and the store is full of beautiful products you won’t easily find abroad, including state-of-the-art rice cookers and hot water heaters. The store is designed for leisure browsing in mind, with calm lighting, plenty of furniture, and an abundance of plants.

For additional shopping and dining, head to Futako Tamagawa Rise. This complex combines apartments, shopping, and event space to serve the many residents in the area. Its location along the Tama River means you can easily enjoy a picnic or stroll before taking a break in the air-conditioned complex. If you’re in need of an upscale gift or souvenir, you can find more conventional shopping at the nearby Tamagawa Takashimaya SC department store.

Cool down by the river

Bring a picnic blanket and a bento box to the banks of the Tama River at Futako Tamagawa Park, and enjoy a relaxing afternoon with friends, family or simply by yourself.

Inside the park you’ll find the traditional landscape garden Kishin-en, which also contains the Former Shimizu Family Residence. This Meiji-period building is open on Sundays, national holidays, and the second Monday of the month.
The Tama River is also the site of an annual fireworks festival. Hundreds of thousands people congregate along the river banks to enjoy unobstructed views of the fizzing fireworks. Check the internet for the exact date and further details.
