Exploring the Seaside Charms of the Takeshiba and Hinode Area

Close to the mouth of the Sumida River, the Takeshiba and Hinode area is a waterfront district known for its passenger boat and cruise ship terminal as well as a boardwalk with panoramic views of Tokyo Bay. This neighborhood has been recently updated with new facilities, making it an even more enjoyable place to relax and appreciate the open air with sweeping vistas.

General Tips

Takeshiba and Hinode area is a great spot for photographing ships and bridges on the Sumida River and Tokyo Bay.
Note that passenger boats for the Sumida River and Tokyo’s islands may change depending on conditions and holiday periods.
Nearby Kyu-Shiba-rikyu and Hama-rikyu gardens have traditional Japanese gardens and refreshing urban green spaces.

Takeshiba Passenger Ship Terminal

A 1-minute walk from Takeshiba Station on the Yurikamome Line or a 7-minute walk from JR Hamamatsucho Station, Takeshiba Passenger Ship Terminal is the heart of this breezy bayside neighborhood. Takeshiba Passenger Ship Terminall is a departure point for ferries sailing to Tokyo’s Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands. This refreshing spot has a boardwalk overlooking Tokyo Bay, with impressive night views of the Sumida River, Tokyo Bay and the Kachidoki district for photography buffs. Next to the pier is a plaza with a nautical theme. It centers on an old-fashioned ship’s mast and rigging that is sometimes illuminated at night.

Tokyo Port City Takeshiba

Opened in 2020, this 40-story office and commercial complex themed on nature and sustainability takes the seaside panoramas of Takeshiba to new heights. The complex includes Skip Terrace and the New Eight Views of Takeshiba, a five-level terrace structure with eight spots providing not only views of Tokyo Bay but unique attractions. These include the sky view with nesting boxes for falcons and kestrels, the bee view with pollinating flowers for bees, the vegetable garden view, the herb garden view, the rice paddy view, the islands view with a wall garden representing the Izu and Ogasawara islands, the water view with an aqua terrarium and the rain garden view that stores water percolating underground. On the third floor of the office building, the Takeshiba Urban Biodiversity Center is a place to learn about conservation of the natural environment.

WATERS takeshiba

Also completed in 2020, WATERS takeshiba is a high-rise complex that is designed to be an urban oasis. It has many high class amenities: atre TAKESHIBA, a shopping mall; mesm TOKYO, Autograph Collection, a luxury hotel; casual and fine dining; and entertainment including musicals staged at the JR-East Shiki Theatre HARU and AKI. WATERS takeshiba also features a waterfront plaza with one-of-a-kind views of the Shiodome River and Hama-rikyu Gardens. Water-bus ferries that ply the Sumida River and Tokyo Bay make stops at a pier next to the plaza. From the pier, you can board Tokyo Cruise ferries heading upriver to the Asakusa district, Odaiba Seaside Park, and Kasai Rinkai Park. The plaza is also adjoined to a tidal flat zone, an ecological preservation area designed to help restore populations of organisms such as gobies, shellfish, and crustaceans. You can observe these fascinating specimens of the Tokyo Bay ecosystem close-up on Tidal Flat Open Day, held on the second Sunday of every month.

Hi-NODE TOKYO HiNODE PiER

Hinode Pier is a departure point for Tokyo Cruise water bus ferries providing a different perspective of the metropolis of Tokyo. The ferries sail upriver to Asakusa, passing under 14 unique bridges, as well as the Tokyo Bay destinations of Odaiba Seaside Park and Tokyo Big Sight. The fleet includes the Himiko, a futuristic spaceship-inspired craft that was designed by manga artist Leiji Matsumoto, whose works include Galaxy Express 999 and Captain Harlock. The nearby Symphony terminal offers afternoon and evening Tokyo Bay tours on large-scale, luxurious cruise ships that can accommodate hundreds of passengers.
Aside from transport links, this waterfront complex features Hi-Node Tokyo Hinode Pier, a relaxing space consisting of a restaurant with a terrace overlooking both the Sumida River and Tokyo Bay on one side and a 727-square-meter tree-lined lawn on the other. From the Beside Seaside café-restaurant and the Berth One multicuisine restaurant, you can enjoy eye-popping views of Tokyo Bay that are dramatically different during the daytime and nighttime.
