With over 2,000 sakura trees on its grounds, Koganei Park is one of Tokyo's most favored spots for hanami or cherry blossom viewing. Home to the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum and former temporary palace for Japan's Crown Prince, the park comes to life each spring when hordes of Tokyoites gather and make merry under sweeping canopies of pale pink flowers.
Yet you can have fun in the park at anytime of year. Roughly a 25-minute train ride from Shinjuku, and a short bus ride or leisurely stroll from connecting stations, Koganei Park features spacious grassy areas, some of Tokyo's best children's playground facilities—the artificial turf sledding hill is especially popular—a steam locomotive display (C57 model), and weekend flea markets.
