Go for a local, old-school shopping experience

Shopping in Tokyo isn't limited to high-end department stores, retail chains, and independent boutiques. For a more local experience, visit a shotengai (shopping street), where you can buy unique items from mom-and-pop stores and get a glimpse of daily life in Tokyo. Some of these shopping streets have a local feel, taking you back to Showa-era (1926-1989) Japan. You might even see family businesses that have been around for decades or centuries, practically making them neighborhood institutions.
