Ross Museum ロース記念館

Hahajima Motochi, Ogasawara Village, Tokyo

Get a peek at island life in the olden days

Hahajima Island has a wild history for a tiny island. It was first visited by Spanish explorers, then claimed by samurai seafarers and finally colonized by Americans. The Ross Museum offers a peek into the lives of the island's earliest inhabitants. The thatched roof building which houses the museum was originally a sugar storehouse built in 1913. Inside you will find whaling tools used by the early islanders as well as old photos and maps documenting daily life on the island.
