Ryogoku Fireworks Museum 両国花火資料館

1F Sumitomo Realty & Development Ryogoku Building, 2-10-8 Ryogoku, Sumida City, Tokyo

Festive firework history

Every July, the Sumida River plays host to the largest fireworks display in the city. Having evolved from a yearly competition between major pyrotechnician guilds, the modern festival showcases the newest developments in the field. Considered the birthplace of Japan’s fireworks traditions, it should come as no surprise that the Ryogoku Fireworks Museum also calls this area home.

Free throughout the year, the museum displays samples of Edo era (1603-1868) fireworks and launchers, as well as posters and other paraphernalia from festivals around the country. While information in English is minimal, the abundance of physical and visual displays make it a worthwhile visit for those with an interest in local history, or just an appreciation of things that go boom.
