The Ogasawara Marine Center (also known as the "Turtle Center") has come a long way since its inception in 1982. Specializing in the research and conservation of the local wildlife, particularly humpback whales and sea turtles, the center has a wealth of information available for you to browse.
Throughout the year, the Marine Center both takes in and rehabilitates ill or injured sea turtles, as well as helps to raise young turtles from eggs through to their release into the wild. If taking pictures of the adorable charges isn't enough, consider signing up for the two-hour educational course where you can get up close and personal with a sea turtle. You can also sponsor turtles (applications accepted between April and June), and receive written updates (with pictures) on the turtle's growth from the staff for ten months.
