Because the Ogasawara Islands have never been connected to the Japanese mainland or any continent, they are blessed with unique animals and plants that have evolved independently. Many of them, however, have become endangered due to invasive species, and are now rarely seen. Each of these manhole covers features a custom-designed plate with a beautiful photo of rare wildlife that inhabits those islands.
