Visiting a restful, therapeutic mountain

Mt. Mitake has long been regarded as a sacred mountain by the mountain-worshipping faith. The area around the 929-meter tall summit contains Musashi-Mitake Jinja Shrine, as well as a row of historical pilgrims’ lodgings with grass thatched roofs around the surrounding region. People tend to focus on the difficulty of climbing the mountain, but it’s possible to reach the summit in just six minutes by using the cable car that ascends the mountain, which has an average grade of 22 degrees (the steepest in the Kanto region).

Mt. Mitake also serves as the entranceway to the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park. The mountain trails have been created to be easy to walk on, allowing visitors to casually enjoy hiking and mountain climbing. A mossy, rocky area of around 1.5 kilometers called the “rock garden” has been designated as part of the Okumitake Scenic Park, one of Tokyo’s famous places of scenic beauty. The clear stream running through the area will surely make you forget about the heat of summer.

Mt. Mitake is also known as one of Japan’s most unique areas where large amounts of Anemonopsis flowers grow. Approximately 50,000 bushes of these beautiful light purple flowers bloom all over the mountain’s slopes from late July to early September, and an Anemonopsis Festival is held in August.

Why not visit Mt. Mitake to view night scenes of the Kanto region that are only visible from the mountain while enjoying quiet, peaceful times in pilgrims’ lodging with hundreds of years of history? Mt. Mitake is a charming place that will help calm and revive your spirit.
