Images of Asia: The East as Longed-for Other in Japanese Art アジアのイメージ 日本美術の「東洋憧憬」

The Asian influences in the work of Japanese artists

The years 1910-1960 was a period when Japan’s intellectuals, art lovers and artists showed great admiration for antique Asian art. Painters and craftsmen were charmed by relics and antiques imported from the Korean peninsula and China. They saw the Yungang Grottoes of Datong and made the connection to Asuka-era Buddhist sculpture, took notice of the then-popular China dress, and gained from Asia a breath of fresh air. This exhibition showcases works where this Asian influence can be seen. Additionally, in the annex gallery, three contemporary artists - Keizaburo Okamura (painter), Nobuyuki Tanaka (urushi craftsman) and Yoshikazu Yamagata (designer) present their work on the theme “Illusory Asia”.
