Showcasing the covers for musical scores painted by Yumeji Takehisa

During the Taisho era in which Yumeji Takehisa (1884-1934) was active, musical scores were household items which allowed people to use music for pleasure. At that time, a lot of attention was paid to the cover illustrations decorating the front of score books. Yumeji produced many of these, for books containing nursery songs and folk songs, including for Seno’o Score, a series of musical scores featuring songs, old and new, from all over the world. His cover images encompass a range of artistic styles, and were beloved of everyone from music lovers to school children. This exhibition presents the world of music book covers that Yumeji helped to expand, and explores the state of music during the Taisho period.
