Meiji Japan through the eyes of visiting and native artists

Meiji era Japan experienced a huge influx of Western cultural influences. The hearts of foreign visitors were moved by the humble lives of the Japanese, their lifestyles set against the backdrop of beautiful scenery, and by that scenery itself. Many travelers and artists came to Japan, and left outstanding travelogues and paintings based on their time here. These works have begun to make their way back to Japan in recent years. Many young Japanese artists were themselves inspired by these visiting artists, and produced a number of outstanding works. Through a joint display of pieces by visiting artists and Japanese artists, this exhibition examines the solemn, dignified radiance of “beautiful Meiji”.
