Decorative Designs on Daily Items of Daimyo Lords 夏季展 大名調度を彩るデザインの世界

Eisei Bunko Museum, 1-1-1 Mejiro-dai, Bunkyo-city, Tokyo
2019-08-31 - 2019-10-09

Unraveling the concept of design through craft items from the Higo Hosokawa household

A look at the world of pattern and design as found in folding screens, lacquerware writing tools and accoutrements for katanas held in the Eisei Bunko collection. Arts and crafts objects passed down through the Higo Hosokawa family are decorated with all sorts of designs. Such objects, which feature scenes of the four seasons, cute animals, people, and literary motifs, are not merely aesthetically pleasing, but sometimes contain wishes or prayers. Also on display are a robe thought to be part of a bride’s wedding garb, and a short-sleeved kimono with beautifully elaborate embroidery. This exhibition lets you get close to the objects and clothing that brought color to the lives of the feudal lords and princesses.
