Introducing Ryukyu island culture through dyed fabrics, including national treasure bingata

Until the Meiji era, Okinawa prefecture prospered as the Ryukyu Kingdom. This exhibition showcases the unique textile culture that developed there through dyed fabrics handed down from the Kingdom’s Sho dynasty, including national treasure-level bingata textiles. Through the exhibition of exquisite examples made of abaca basho cloth and jofu woven fabric of specific plants, alongside tools and patterns used in bingata, visitors can develop a deeper understanding of the techniques involved, and of dyed and woman textile culture in general. These techniques have been kept alive to this day, and the event includes exhibitions of the work of living national treasures, providing a look at the current state of Okinawan dyed and woman textiles.
