An overview of the career of this relatively unknown artist

Samuel Jesserun de Mesquita (1868-1944) was a Dutch artist born into a Portuguese Jewish family, who worked in the genres of painting, printmaking and decorative art. M. C. Escher, a pinter of illusionism, is said to have been greatly influenced by Mesquita, and his early works strongly resemble Mesquita’s. Recently, Mequita’s work has undergone a re-evaluation in Europe, with 2018 being the 150th anniversary of his birth, and this year 2019 marks the 75th anniversary of his death. This exhibition is the first fully-fledged retrospective of Mesquita’s art in Japan with a focus on around 180 examples of prints alongside other works for a total of around 240 exhibits.
